Conditions, safety, and your own judgment

Phenophase reads live public data and turns it into a plain-language verdict about whether a place is worth visiting right now. That verdict is information, not instruction, and not a guarantee of safety.

Not a substitute for official sources

The readings here are pulled from third-party feeds (NOAA tides and weather, the National Weather Service, NDBC buoys, the National Park Service, the Northwest Avalanche Center, SNOTEL, eBird, iNaturalist, EPA AirNow, and others) and can be delayed, incomplete, or wrong. Before you rely on conditions for anything with real consequence, confirm them with the authoritative source: the official NOAA tide tables, the National Weather Service forecast, the Northwest Avalanche Center, the managing ranger station or park office, and current on-site signage. Where our verdict and an official source disagree, trust the official source.

The data can be stale

Pages refresh on a schedule and the verdict is cached, so what you read can trail real conditions by minutes to an hour or more. A feed can also go down and leave a reading blank or outdated. Treat every number as a starting point to verify, not a live instrument.

The outdoors carries real risk

Several places we cover are genuinely hazardous. A tide-gated walk like Dungeness Spit can strand you if the flood tide cuts off the beach. Tide-pool rocks are slick and the tide returns fast. A mountain road can be closed, icy, or avalanche-prone, and high-country weather turns without warning. These conditions can cause serious injury or death. You are responsible for assessing the risk, for your own preparation and equipment, and for the safety of anyone with you. Know the tide, watch the weather, turn back in good time, and never let a green verdict override what you see in front of you.

Wildlife, foraging, and access

Bird, marine-mammal, and species sightings are crowd-sourced and may be inaccurate or out of date. Never harvest shellfish without checking the current Washington Department of Health closures and holding the required license; biotoxin closures can make harvesting both unsafe and illegal. Respect all refuge, sanctuary, and park rules and every posted closure, which exist to protect both you and the place.
